MADURAI: Amid the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam’s (TVK) campaign projecting party chief Vijay as a potential Prime Ministerial candidate, Congress leader Karti P Chidambaram on Monday said his party was aware of the “political reality” surrounding the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
The Congress leader was responding to the growing “Vijay for PM” chorus within the ruling party in Tamil Nadu.
The Congress was the first political party in the state to extend support to the Vijay-led TVK in its efforts to form the government in May. The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), the Left parties and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) subsequently extended their support.
Reacting to the VCK’s reported ambition of projecting its founder for the Prime Minister’s post in the 2029 Lok Sabha polls, Karti sought to play down the issue, pointing to the numbers required to form a government at the Centre.
“One needs 272 MPs to become the Prime Minister,” he said, underlining the importance of securing a majority in the Lok Sabha.
His remarks come amid increasing political discussions in Tamil Nadu over possible alliances and leadership claims ahead of the 2029 general election. The competing projections are expected to gain greater prominence as parties begin positioning themselves for the next Lok Sabha polls.
