President Murmu Meets Artisans and Weavers from North Eastern States

President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday interacted with a group of artisans and weavers from the North Eastern states at Rashtrapati Bhavan and praised them for preserving India’s rich cultural heritage.

The artisans and weavers had contributed to crafting invitation kits and showcasing the diverse artistic traditions of the North East during the “At Home” reception hosted at Rashtrapati Bhavan on January 26 this year.

The group included artisans and weavers from Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, Tripura, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim.

According to officials, artisans from Nagaland created baskets using banana fibre and bamboo, weavers from Assam prepared traditional stoles, artisans from Manipur showcased black pottery, while artisans from Sikkim displayed products made from natural fibres.

During the interaction, the artisans shared their experiences of participating in the Republic Day event and thanked the President for providing them with a national platform to showcase their skills and traditions.

Addressing the gathering, President Murmu described artisans and weavers as “the shining example of the living heritage of the nation” and stressed the need to support them so that traditional artistic knowledge reaches wider audiences and helps communities become self-reliant.

She also urged the artisans to pass on these valuable traditions to younger generations to preserve the cultural heritage of the country.
