THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Election Commission of India on Friday announced a paid holiday for all eligible voters on April 9, the day of the Kerala Assembly elections.
The directive applies to employees working in any business, trade or establishment, ensuring they are able to exercise their right to vote without loss of wages.
The Commission said the order has been issued in line with the provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1951. “No deduction of wages shall be made on account of such a paid holiday,” the EC stated, adding that employers violating the rule will be liable for penalties.
The Commission also clarified that daily wage earners and casual workers are entitled to the same benefit. Kerala is scheduled to go to the polls on April 9.
