Wayanad Tunnel Project Gets Final Green Signal, Hill Highway Dream Set to Become Reality

Kozhikode: In a landmark development for Kerala’s hill regions, the much-anticipated Anakkampoyil–Kalladi–Meppadi tunnel road project has received its final clearance from the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. Public Works Minister P.A. Mohammed Riyas confirmed that the Stage-2 approval marks the last major hurdle, paving the way for construction to begin.

The ambitious project is expected to dramatically improve connectivity between Anakkampoyil in Kozhikode and Meppadi in Wayanad, reducing travel time and ensuring safer, smoother journeys through the hilly terrain. Funded by the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB), the four-lane project will be built at an estimated cost of ₹2,134.5 crore.

Spanning a total length of 8.73 kilometres — 5.58 km in Wayanad and 3.15 km in Kozhikode — the highlight of the project is its 8.1-kilometre twin tunnel stretch. The Konkan Railway Corporation Limited will serve as the implementing agency.

Once completed, the tunnel road is expected to revolutionize transportation in the region, boosting tourism, trade, and economic growth, while fulfilling a long-cherished dream of the people in Kerala’s high ranges.
