The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is preparing to roll out a new rule that will prohibit the photocopying of Aadhaar cards. The regulation, expected to come into force soon, is designed to prevent hotels, event organisers, and similar establishments from collecting or storing physical copies of Aadhaar.
UIDAI CEO Bhuvanesh Kumar told PTI that all Aadhaar-based verification must now shift to secure digital platforms, eliminating the widespread practice of handing over photocopies in exchange for services. Under the new rule, even individuals will not be allowed to keep photocopies of someone else’s Aadhaar card, a measure aimed at curbing misuse and tightening compliance with the Aadhaar Act.
For years, Aadhaar photocopies have been routinely demanded for hotel check-ins, event registrations, and various services—a practice that exposes sensitive personal information to significant data breach risks. Officials believe the upcoming changes will greatly reduce such vulnerabilities and ensure stronger protection of citizens’ identities.
Once the rule is implemented, strict action will be taken against individuals or organisations that continue to collect or store Aadhaar photocopies. All entities conducting Aadhaar verification, including private companies and hospitality establishments, will be required to register under the new system as UIDAI moves toward a fully digital, paperless verification process.
The shift marks a major policy push towards safeguarding personal data and modernising identity verification across the country.
