New Delhi: The Women’s Reservation Bill is set to be taken up for discussion in Parliament today, marking a significant step towards increasing women’s representation in legislative bodies.
The proposed legislation seeks to reserve 33 per cent of seats for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. The government aims to implement the provision ahead of the 2029 general elections.
The bill is part of a broader legislative package that also includes proposals related to delimitation, which could lead to an increase in the total number of Lok Sabha seats.
While the Centre has projected the move as a historic reform to empower women and strengthen democracy, opposition parties have raised concerns over linking the reservation with delimitation and its possible impact on state-wise representation.
The issue is expected to trigger intense debate in Parliament, with both the government and opposition gearing up to present their positions.
