Vice Presidential Poll Set for September 9 After Dhankhar’s Surprise Exit; EC Issues Election Timeline

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced September 9, 2025, as the date for electing India’s next Vice President, following the sudden resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21. Citing health concerns, Dhankhar became the first Vice President in Indian history to resign mid-term, stepping down nearly two years before his tenure was due to end in August 2027.

The formal notification for the election will be issued on August 7, with nominations closing on August 21. The final date for withdrawal of candidature is August 25, and polling will take place in Parliament House, with the result to be declared on the same day—September 9.

The electoral process will follow the proportional representation system, using secret ballots under the single transferable vote method. The Electoral College comprises elected and nominated members of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Rajya Sabha Secretary-General P.C. Mody has been appointed as the Returning Officer for the poll.

Dhankhar’s resignation has triggered political ripples, with opposition leaders demanding transparency, and speculation rife about underlying political tensions. His departure comes amid unresolved issues in Parliament, including talk of impeachment motions and strained Centre-opposition relations.

Despite the uncertainty, the NDA alliance, which enjoys a numerical advantage in Parliament, is expected to have a strong upper hand in the election. The opposition, however, is likely to rally behind a joint candidate, with internal deliberations already underway.

As India gears up for its 17th Vice Presidential election, all eyes are now on the nominations and alliances that could shape the country’s next second-highest constitutional office.
