Udhayanidhi Stalin Demands Action Over Custodial Death of Disabled Shopkeeper in Tamil Nadu

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin has condemned the death of a differently abled man in judicial custody in Nagercoil and demanded strict action against those responsible.

The deceased, S. Sabari Varman (35), a differently abled shopkeeper from Ethankadu near Nagercoil, died in judicial custody after being arrested by the Thenthamaraikulam Police.

According to the police, Sabari Varman was arrested on charges of allegedly selling banned gutka. They said he was in good health at the time of his arrest but later fell ill after questioning and died on July 13 while lodged in the Nagercoil sub-jail.

Questioning the circumstances surrounding the death, Udhayanidhi Stalin expressed shock over the incident and called for a fair and transparent investigation. He urged the government to take appropriate action against any officials found responsible and ensure justice for the deceased and his family.

The custodial death has sparked fresh concerns over the treatment of prisoners and accountability within the state’s law enforcement and prison systems.
