Toddler Dies After Alleged Anaesthesia Error at Kannur Hospital

Kannur: An 18-month-old boy who had been on ventilator support after allegedly suffering complications from the administration of anaesthesia at a private hospital in Kannur has died.

The child, Devansh Shaurya, son of Suraj and Vijisha of Eramam in Payyanur, was undergoing treatment at Baby Memorial Hospital, Payyanur. Hospital sources said he was declared brain dead after his blood pressure dropped on Friday afternoon.

According to the family, Devansh sustained injuries to his face and lips after falling while playing four days ago. Doctors at a Primary Health Centre reportedly advised suturing the wounds, following which he was taken to Baby Memorial Hospital. The child allegedly became unconscious after being administered anaesthesia for the procedure.

The family has alleged medical negligence, claiming that anaesthesia was administered despite the child’s young age, and lodged a complaint with the police.

Police have registered a case against Dr. Anjali Pothuval, the anaesthesiologist who administered the anaesthesia, and an investigation is underway.
