New Delhi: The Supreme Court has stayed the Kerala High Court’s order restricting the use of elephants in temple festivals. A bench comprising Justices B V Nagarathna and S C Sharma issued the stay on the January 13, 2025, order, stating that the use of elephants in temple festivals is a part of cultural tradition.
The court observed that the High Court’s directive could have the effect of stalling temple festivities that traditionally involve elephants. The ruling provides temporary relief to temple authorities and festival organizers who rely on elephants as an integral part of religious and cultural celebrations in Kerala.
