Study Finds Standardised Ashwagandha Well Tolerated Over 24 Weeks

New Delhi: A multicentre clinical trial has found that daily use of a standardised Ashwagandha root extract for 24 weeks was well tolerated, with no evidence of treatment-related liver or kidney injury.

Published in Frontiers in Medicine on August 20, 2026, the randomised, double-blind study involved 1,200 adults across seven centres in India. Participants received either 500 mg of standardised Ashwagandha root extract or a placebo daily.

Among the 1,032 participants who completed the study, liver and kidney function tests remained within the reported reference ranges. No serious adverse events were attributed to the Ashwagandha intervention, and no participant withdrew because of an adverse event.

The study also found no significant difference in vaccine-induced immune response between the Ashwagandha and placebo groups. Researchers said the findings add to the clinical evidence on the safety and tolerability of standardised Ashwagandha preparations.
