Thiruvananthapuram: The death toll due to Shigella infection in Kerala has risen to five after two more fatalities were confirmed by the state health department on Monday.
Among the latest victims is Arjav, a seven-year-old boy from Pookkottur in Malappuram district, who died while undergoing treatment at the Government Medical College Hospital in Kozhikode.
According to health officials, the child was admitted to the hospital on June 12 with symptoms of fever and diarrhoea. Subsequent medical tests confirmed that he had contracted a Shigella infection.
Health authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have intensified surveillance and preventive measures in affected areas to contain the spread of the disease. Shigella is a bacterial infection that primarily affects the intestines and can cause severe diarrhoea, fever, and stomach cramps, particularly among children.
