India, Slovakia Elevate Ties to Comprehensive Partnership

Bratislava: Prime Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral talks with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico at the historic Bratislava Castle on Monday, with both countries agreeing to elevate their relationship to the level of a Comprehensive Partnership.

Prime Minister Modi received a ceremonial welcome upon his arrival before the two leaders held discussions in both one-on-one and delegation-level formats. The leaders described the upgraded partnership as a new chapter in India-Slovakia relations, reflecting the shared values and longstanding friendship between the two nations.

The talks covered a wide range of areas, including trade and investment, defence and security, space cooperation, civil nuclear energy, renewable energy, digital innovation, academic exchanges, culture, and talent mobility. Both sides also explored opportunities for collaboration in emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence, supercomputing, and advanced technologies.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Modi thanked Slovakia for its support and solidarity following the terrorist attack in Pahalgam in April 2025. The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms and discussed key regional and global issues of mutual interest.

The two leaders welcomed the positive outcomes of the recent India-European Union Summit, including the successful conclusion of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement and the adoption of a Joint Comprehensive Strategic Agenda aimed at strengthening cooperation across multiple sectors.

Following the talks, both countries exchanged Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) covering cooperation in digital technologies, labour migration, higher education and research, and audio-visual production. A Letter of Intent to enhance defence cooperation was also exchanged.

In a significant development, India and Slovakia agreed to establish the first-ever Chair in Artificial Intelligence at the Technical University of Kosice.

Prime Minister Fico later hosted a luncheon in honour of Prime Minister Modi, who also invited his Slovak counterpart to visit India at a mutually convenient date.
