Thiruvananthapuram: Weak monsoon conditions and a lack of rain have pushed temperatures above normal across several parts of Kerala, leading to a rise in electricity consumption and prompting authorities to caution that partial power restrictions may be imposed during evening peak hours.
According to the latest data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Kottayam recorded a maximum temperature of 35°C on Sunday, which was 4.4°C above normal — the highest departure recorded among the state’s weather stations.
Punalur in Kollam district registered 35.2°C, 3.7°C above normal. Vellanikkara and Palakkad recorded 34.3°C each, with temperatures 4.1°C and 3.9°C above normal, respectively.
The continued heat has increased the use of cooling appliances, putting additional pressure on the state’s power system, particularly during the evening peak-demand period.
