Kozhikode: A devastating fire engulfed a commercial shopping complex near the Kozhikode bus stand, causing estimated losses exceeding ₹75 crore. The inferno completely destroyed the godown of Calicut Textiles and a nearby medical storage facility.
The fire, which erupted around 4:30 PM yesterday, raged for hours and was brought under control only by 11 PM after a strenuous operation by the fire brigade. Emergency crews deployed earthmovers and shattered glass panels to access the blaze, working tirelessly to contain the flames.
Today, fire safety experts will conduct a detailed technical inspection under the leadership of the District Fire Officer to determine the exact cause of the fire. Kozhikode Mayor Beena Philip announced that a comprehensive investigation is in progress.
The city’s Corporation Steering Committee convened urgently to assess the situation, while the state government promptly initiated an official inquiry. The Chief Secretary has instructed District Collector Snehal Kumar to submit a detailed report within two days.
Amid the chaos, sharp criticism has arisen over the prior closure of the Beach Fire Station — the city’s sole fire response unit — which many argue severely hindered timely firefighting efforts.
