Major UPI Disruption Hits India: GPay, Paytm, and SBI Users Face Payment Failures

On April 2, 2025, users across India encountered widespread disruptions in Unified Payments Interface (UPI) services, particularly on Google Pay (GPay), Paytm, and the State Bank of India (SBI). According to Downdetector, reports of failed transactions surged throughout the day, peaking between 5:00 PM and 8:00 PM IST. Around 54% of Google Pay and Paytm users reported fund transfer issues, while 43% faced payment failures and 3% experienced app-related difficulties. SBI customers were also severely impacted, with 57% facing fund transfer failures, 34% encountering mobile banking issues, and 9% struggling with account balance updates. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) acknowledged the issue, attributing it to intermittent transaction declines and increased latency in the UPI network. NPCI assured users that it was working with affected banks to restore normal operations. This marks the second major UPI outage within a week, raising concerns over the reliability of India’s digital payment infrastructure. Users were advised to stay updated with official bank communications and consider alternative payment methods, such as debit or credit cards, until the issue was fully resolved.
