Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala’s EcoSense initiative, launched under the Swachh Bharat Mission–Urban 2.0, is encouraging students to adopt sustainable waste-management practices and become environmental champions.

Implemented by the Local Self Government Department in collaboration with the General Education Department, the Student Green Brigade Scholarship programme aims to provide scholarships to 50,000 students while developing green skills and environmental awareness.

Nearly 46,000 scholarships have already been awarded under the initiative. Selected students receive a scholarship of Rs 1,500 and a certificate of recognition for their contribution to waste management.

The programme promotes waste segregation, reuse, resource conservation and innovative solutions to local waste-related challenges. Students from Classes 6 to 9 and first-year higher secondary and vocational higher secondary courses are eligible under different categories.

Under the scheme, 50 students from each grama panchayat, 75 from each municipality and 100 from each corporation are selected for the scholarship.
