Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala General Education Department has decided to sanction 120 new Plus One batches in Palakkad and Malappuram districts to address the ongoing shortage of Higher Secondary seats in the Malabar region.
According to the department, the two districts have been facing a significant shortage of Plus One batches, resulting in thousands of students being left without admission after the first allotment.
However, the decision has also sparked controversy, with allegations that the committees responsible for approving new batches were not informed before the announcement.
The seat shortage remains severe across northern Kerala. Kozhikode has a deficit affecting 12,062 students, while Malappuram has the highest shortage, with 35,178 students yet to secure Plus One admission. Palakkad is short by 15,394 seats, followed by Thrissur with 4,289, Kasaragod with 4,496, and Wayanad with 2,076 seats.
Overall, 80,869 students from Kasaragod to Thrissur are still awaiting Plus One seats, highlighting the continuing demand for additional Higher Secondary batches in the region.
