Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is on high alert after reporting 18 active cases of amoebic meningoencephalitis, a rare but deadly infection caused by the so-called “brain-eating amoeba.” The state has recorded 41 cases so far this year, sparking urgent preventive measures.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has instructed local bodies to intensify monitoring and awareness campaigns to curb the spread. In response, the government has rolled out the “Water is Life” initiative, aimed at tackling water-borne diseases through public awareness, improved sanitation, and safe water practices.
Health officials have urged people to avoid bathing in contaminated water sources, maintain hygiene, and seek immediate medical care if symptoms like fever, headache, or nausea appear after water exposure.
