Kerala HC Defers Decision on Elephant Parade at Poornathrayeesa Temple Festival

The Kerala High Court has postponed its ruling on a petition seeking approval to parade 15 elephants during the iconic Poornathrayeesa Temple festival. Temple authorities, who filed the plea, emphasized that the presence of elephants is a vital aspect of the event’s traditional and cultural heritage.

However, animal rights advocates have strongly opposed the proposal, highlighting concerns about the safety and well-being of the elephants involved. The court has asked for further input from both sides before making a decision.

Renowned for its grand processions and rich rituals, the Poornathrayeesa Temple festival attracts thousands of devotees annually. Yet, the ongoing debate about the ethical treatment of elephants in cultural events has sparked broader discussions on balancing tradition with animal welfare.

The High Court is set to reconvene later this month to deliberate on the matter, weighing the significance of preserving cultural practices against the need for ethical reforms in wildlife care.
