Heavy Rain Continues Across Kerala; Red Alert in Three Districts, Trawling Ban Begins Today

The southwest monsoon has intensified across Kerala, with heavy rainfall continuing in several parts of the state. A Red Alert remains in force in Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts due to the likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall.

As a precautionary measure, district authorities have declared a holiday for educational institutions in Kasaragod, Kozhikode, and Kannur. In Kozhikode, the decision was taken in view of forecasts of strong winds and heavy rain. However, university and PSC examinations will be held as scheduled without any changes.

Heavy rain has also been reported in several districts, including Kottayam. The India Meteorological Department has issued an Orange Alert for Wayanad and Malappuram districts, while a Yellow Alert is in place for Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, and Palakkad.

Meanwhile, the annual trawling ban along Kerala’s coast will come into effect from midnight today and will remain in force until midnight on July 31. The 52-day ban applies only to mechanised fishing boats, while traditional fishermen and small fishing vessels will be permitted to operate.

The Fisheries Department said arrangements have been made in coordination with the Civil Supplies Department to provide free ration to workers employed on mechanised fishing vessels and related sectors during the ban period.

In addition, all fishing activities except those carried out by traditional fishing vessels have been prohibited in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) along the west coast for 61 days, until July 31, as part of measures to protect marine resources and support fish breeding during the monsoon season.
