Free bus travel scheme benefits 5.9 crore women; men gain from fare cuts

Chennai: The expanded ‘Vettri Payanam’ free bus travel scheme for women has benefited around 5.9 crore passengers since its launch on October 2, an official said on Thursday.

Around 88 lakh women benefited from the scheme on a single day on October 7, he said.

Male commuters have also benefited from fare reductions introduced on certain routes. For instance, the fare on the Tirunelveli-Tiruchendur route was reduced from Rs 50 to Rs 38.

Fares on express buses on some other routes have also been reduced, according to a source.
