Kochi: The ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CMFRI) has advised consumers not to avoid tuna or other commercially available fish solely due to reports of parasites in fish from specific regions.
The advisory follows reports of parasites found in skipjack tuna from the Atlantic Ocean off Brazil. CMFRI said parasite occurrence can vary across fish populations and geographical regions depending on ecological conditions.
The institute said fish examined along the Indian coast, including tuna, have not shown external signs of harmful parasitic infestation. It stressed that findings from one region should not be generalised to Indian waters.
CMFRI advised consumers to ensure proper cleaning, prompt removal of internal organs and thorough cooking, which kills parasites and reduces potential food-safety risks.
