Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay on Tuesday ordered the closure of 717 retail liquor outlets across the state, citing public welfare.
According to an official release, the decision includes shutting down 276 liquor shops located near places of worship, 186 outlets near educational institutions and 255 shops functioning close to bus stands.
The state government said the closures will be implemented within the next two weeks.
The move comes days after Vijay assumed office as Chief Minister, with the government stating that the decision was taken in view of public concerns and social welfare.
