CID Issues Fresh Summons to Abhishek Banerjee in Alleged Signature Forgery Case

KOLKATA: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Monday served a second notice to Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee, directing him to appear before investigators on June 8 in connection with an alleged signature forgery case.

CID officials visited Banerjee’s residence for the second time in just over 48 hours and handed over the fresh summons, sources said.

The probe relates to allegations that forged signatures of several party MLAs were used in a communication sent to the Speaker of the West Bengal Assembly endorsing the selection of Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as the Leader of Opposition.

The latest notice came after Abhishek Banerjee did not appear before the CID on Monday as directed earlier. He reportedly sought two weeks’ time to appear before investigators, citing health reasons.

According to sources, Banerjee has now been asked to appear at the CID headquarters, Bhabani Bhavan, for questioning as part of the ongoing investigation.

The CID is continuing its probe into the alleged use of fake signatures and is examining the circumstances under which the communication was submitted to the Assembly Speaker.
