The Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has directed all schools in the state to conclude training sessions during April and May by 10:30 AM in view of the intense heat.
The order was issued by a full bench led by Chairperson K. V. Manoj Kumar, along with members Shajesh Bhaskar and Dr. Wilson. The Commission has also called for the suspension of activities such as sports events, NCC, SPC, Scouts and Guides parades, assemblies, and excursions during this period.
Schools have been instructed to allow students to wear comfortable clothing instead of compulsory uniforms for training sessions, considering the extreme weather conditions. Conducting day-long training sessions and enforcing uniforms in such heat was termed a serious violation of child rights.
The directive follows complaints from parents in Thiruvananthapuram and Malappuram, highlighting health concerns among children due to rising temperatures. Authorities noted that excessive heat can lead to dehydration, fatigue, dizziness, and other health issues in students.
The Commission has asked the Director of Public Instruction, SPC State Nodal Officer, NCC Additional Director General, and Scouts and Guides Chief Commissioner to ensure implementation of the guidelines. A compliance report must be submitted within 15 days as per existing rules.
