BJP’s B Gopalakrishnan in Trouble Over Alleged Communal Campaign Video

A controversy has erupted in poll-bound Kerala after an alleged communal remark by BJP candidate B Gopalakrishnan in the Guruvayur constituency triggered political and legal action.

The ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) and the opposition Indian National Congress have approached the Election Commission seeking action against the BJP leader. They allege that his statement, made in a campaign video, carries communal overtones and violates election norms.

The row centres on a video in which Gopalakrishnan reportedly claimed that Guruvayur constituency has not elected a Hindu MLA for nearly five decades. He also alleged that both the LDF and the UDF have not been fielding candidates from the Hindu community.

Opposition parties have strongly criticised the remarks, arguing that such statements could disturb communal harmony in the state, especially during an election period. The Kerala Students’ Union (KSU), the student wing affiliated with the Congress, has also taken legal steps in the matter. The organisation has filed a petition before the High Court and lodged a police complaint, demanding strict action against the BJP candidate.

With multiple complaints now before constitutional and legal authorities, the focus has shifted to the Election Commission’s response and whether further action will be initiated.

Advocate B Gopalakrishnan said he stands by his earlier remarks, asserting that he has not made any controversial statement but has only stated the truth.

“What I said is 100 percent true. I stand by that truth. There is no change. If we speak about Hindus, it is labelled as controversial,” he said.

He further alleged that both the Indian National Congress and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) had actively participated in events related to a Muslim religious scholar from Chavakkad, but did not show similar interest during the Mahakumbh Mela held on the banks of the Nila River.

“Those who want to create controversy will continue to do so,” Gopalakrishnan added.
