Banking on the Rails: India’s First ATM Installed on Moving Train by Central Railway

Mumbai: In a groundbreaking move to enhance passenger convenience, Central Railway has installed an ATM onboard the Mumbai–Manmad Panchavati Express, marking the first-ever banking service on an Indian train.

This pioneering initiative aims to bring banking services directly to commuters. The ATM, operated by a private bank, has been strategically set up in a secure cubicle at the rear of the AC chair car coach. Safety features include a shuttered door system to ensure the machine remains protected while the train is in motion.

The special coach was modified at the Manmad Railway Workshop, showcasing the innovation behind this initiative. Railway officials confirmed that the service will soon be made available to passengers, and if successful, the ATM model could be replicated on more trains across the country.

Running daily between Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Manmad Junction in Nashik, the Panchavati Express now adds another feather to its cap by offering onboard banking — a first in India’s railway history.

This experimental project not only modernizes train travel but also opens the door for financial inclusion on the move, making train journeys smarter and more convenient than ever.
