Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spotlighted the Great Nicobar Island Project, calling it a matter of strategic, defence, and national importance. He said the initiative would transform the island into a maritime and air connectivity hub in the Indian Ocean Region.
The PM’s remarks came after sharing an article by Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav, who described the project as a model for balancing economic growth with ecological preservation. Key features include a container transshipment terminal, a greenfield international airport, a 450 MVA gas-and-solar power plant, and a planned township.
While the project has drawn praise for its economic and security potential, it has also sparked concerns over ecological impact and indigenous rights. Modi and Yadav stressed that environmental safeguards and social protections are built into the plan to address such challenges.
