PhonePe Rolls Out PIN-Free Payments Up to ₹5,000 with New Biometric Feature

New Delhi: In a move set to make digital payments faster and more seamless, PhonePe has introduced a biometric authentication feature that allows users to complete transactions of up to ₹5,000 without entering a UPI PIN. The upgrade is designed to simplify everyday payments and enhance user convenience.

With the new feature, users can authorize payments instantly using their smartphone’s fingerprint scanner or Face ID. The company said the initiative aims to deliver a quicker, smoother, and interruption-free payment experience — especially beneficial for people making frequent transactions while commuting or in public spaces, where entering a PIN can be inconvenient.

The PIN-free facility applies only to transactions up to ₹5,000. For payments exceeding this limit, the traditional UPI PIN will continue to be mandatory to ensure financial security. The system uses the phone’s built-in screen lock mechanism as an additional layer of authentication, functioning similar to two-factor verification.

Currently available only for Android users, the feature can be activated through the PhonePe app by navigating to the Profile section, selecting “Manage Payments,” and enabling the Biometric Pay option for linked bank accounts.

The update is expected to provide major relief to users who rely on UPI for daily purchases, further strengthening PhonePe’s position in India’s rapidly evolving digital payments ecosystem.
