Chandrapuram Ponnusamy (C. P.) Radhakrishnan was sworn in today as the 15th Vice-President of India at a formal ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office.
The 67-year-old leader had won the Vice-Presidential election on September 9, defeating opposition nominee B. Sudershan Reddy by a margin of 152 votes, securing 452 votes against Reddy’s 300. The election was necessitated after former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned on July 21 due to health reasons.
In a symbolic moment, Dhankhar made his first public appearance since stepping down by attending the swearing-in ceremony. Also present were Prime Minister Narendra Modi, senior Union ministers Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh, BJP President J. P. Nadda, along with former Vice Presidents Hamid Ansari and M. Venkaiah Naidu.
Radhakrishnan took the oath in English, invoking “in the name of God.” A seasoned politician and former Governor of Maharashtra, he now assumes India’s second-highest constitutional office, stepping into a pivotal role in national governance.
