New Delhi: Coal India Limited (CIL) is accelerating the modernisation of its underground and open-cast mines through artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT), automation and advanced digital technologies to improve safety, efficiency and sustainability.
The company is deploying high-capacity mining equipment, blast-free technologies, AI-based safety systems, GPS-enabled fleet management and predictive maintenance. It is also introducing advanced underground mining technologies, including Continuous Miners and Longwall systems, to boost production.
Under its First Mile Connectivity programme, 46 of 92 planned projects have been commissioned, creating approximately 432 million tonnes per annum of coal-handling capacity. CIL is also strengthening railway infrastructure and adopting conveyor systems for coal transportation.
The company’s future plans include autonomous mining equipment, 5G networks, digital twins, electric mobility and AI-powered environmental monitoring. Through its research and development initiatives, CIL aims to invest ₹1,900 crore by 2030 in advanced mining technologies, gasification, battery recycling and other clean-energy projects.
