New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive in Tianjin, China, this evening to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, marking his first visit to the country since the Galwan Valley clash. A high-profile meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping is scheduled for tomorrow at noon (local time).
Ahead of his departure, Modi underlined India’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with China through “a strategic, long-term vision built on mutual respect, shared interests, and sensitivity.” He stressed that stable India-China relations are vital for peace in the Indo-Pacific and for bringing stability to the global economy.
The visit comes at a time of growing global economic uncertainty and follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to impose a 50% tariff on Indian goods. Modi is expected to use the SCO summit to deepen cooperation among Asian nations while resetting ties with Beijing.
“Since my meeting with President Xi in Kazan last year, India and China have seen steady progress in bilateral relations. Stronger ties between neighbors can only benefit regional growth,” Modi said.
