New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday ruled that individuals excluded from the draft voters’ list during the Special Summary Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar can submit their Aadhaar details to claim inclusion.
The order came while the Court was hearing a batch of petitions challenging the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) June 24 directive, which mandated a special revision of the electoral rolls ahead of the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections.
The Court clarified that submission of Aadhaar should be accepted as a valid proof of identity to facilitate inclusion, ensuring that no eligible voter is left out of the rolls.
The petitions had questioned the legality and timing of the ECI’s directive, arguing that it could disenfranchise a large section of voters. The Supreme Court’s intervention is expected to provide relief to those who were inadvertently excluded during the verification process.
