New Delhi: Amit Shah has etched his name into the record books by becoming India’s longest-serving Union Home Minister, surpassing BJP veteran L.K. Advani’s tenure. As of August 4, 2025, Shah has served 2,258 days in the high-profile role, overtaking Advani’s record of 2,256 days from March 1998 to May 2004.
Since taking charge on May 30, 2019, Shah has been a central figure in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet, steering the nation’s internal security, law and order, and national integration. He continued in office through Modi’s second term and was reappointed as Home Minister on June 10, 2024, under the current government.
Shah has also outpaced Congress stalwart Govind Ballabh Pant, who served as Home Minister for over six years between 1955 and 1961.
Apart from the Home Ministry, Shah also serves as India’s first Minister of Cooperation, further solidifying his influence in shaping key national policies. Known for his sharp political acumen and strong administrative grip, Shah’s record-breaking tenure marks a significant milestone in India’s political and governance landscape.
