New Delhi– The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has intensified its investigation into the massive shipwreck off the Kochi coast by naming Vizhinjam Port and the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) as parties to the ongoing environmental case.
Acting on its own motion, the tribunal took serious note of the ecological fallout from the sinking of the Liberian-flagged container ship MSC ELS 3 on May 25, 2025, and is seeking direct accountability. The NGT stated that involving Vizhinjam Port and MSC is crucial for uncovering the full picture — from determining liability to outlining steps for preventing similar maritime disasters.
The shipwreck, which led to widespread coastal pollution, sparked environmental alarm, especially due to the presence of hazardous substances among the 640 containers on board. Of particular concern are 13 containers believed to hold dangerous goods, the exact contents of which remain unclear.
The tribunal has also requested details of petitions related to the incident that are pending before the Kerala High Court. By expanding the scope of the investigation, the NGT aims to ensure environmental justice and tighten regulatory oversight over maritime safety and port operations.
The case underscores growing concerns over coastal safety and the handling of hazardous cargo near ecologically sensitive areas.
