Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended heartfelt condolences on the passing of veteran Communist leader and former Kerala Chief Minister V. S. Achuthanandan, hailing him as a devoted public servant who spent his life working for the progress of Kerala. In a message shared on social media, the Prime Minister recalled their interactions during their time as Chief Ministers—Modi of Gujarat and Achuthanandan of Kerala—emphasizing the mutual respect they shared despite ideological differences.
Fondly known as “Comrade VS,” Achuthanandan passed away at the age of 101 on July 21, 2025, while undergoing treatment at SUT Hospital in Pattom following a cardiac arrest. PM Modi’s tribute described him as a towering figure in Indian politics, admired for his unwavering dedication to the welfare of the people.
Leaders across party lines joined in remembering Achuthanandan’s remarkable legacy. Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar called him a “true grassroots leader,” while Congress MP Shashi Tharoor referred to him as a “giant of Kerala’s Communist movement” and a “mass leader” whose journey from humble beginnings to political prominence inspired generations.
The Prime Minister’s message, reflecting rare bipartisan admiration, added to the wave of tributes pouring in from across the nation as Kerala bids farewell to one of its most respected political icons.
