Kerala High Court Orders Police Protection During Calicut University Union Election Over Apprehensions of Unrest

The Kerala High Court has directed the state police to ensure full protection during the Calicut University Union election, scheduled for July 22, 2025, citing serious concerns over possible unrest and threats to candidates.

The decision came after Shifana P.K., a chairperson candidate, filed a petition alleging threats and intimidation by Student Federation of India (SFI) members. The petitioner submitted that multiple candidates faced harassment, and a First Information Report (FIR) was already registered in connection with the threats.

Justice N. Nagaresh, who heard the plea, observed that the right to contest and participate in a democratic election must be safeguarded. The court directed the Director General of Police (DGP) and District Superintendent of Police (SP) to provide round-the-clock security from the commencement of polling until the results are declared.

The court noted that similar security measures were ordered during the previous year’s election and stressed that fair elections free of fear and coercion are essential in educational institutions.

Additionally, notices have been served to three SFI activists in relation to the alleged threats and for causing damage to university property.

This verdict highlights the judiciary’s strong stance on protecting democratic rights in student elections and sends a clear message that any form of intimidation or violence will not be tolerated.
