Kerala’s Vande Bharat Gets a Major Boost: Coach Capacity Doubled to Meet Soaring Demand

New Delhi: The Ministry of Railways has approved additional coaches for two key trains operating in Kerala — the Mangaluru–Thiruvananthapuram Vande Bharat Express and the Kottayam–Nilambur Road Intercity Express.

Union Minister of State George Kurian announced that the Vande Bharat Express will now operate with 16 coaches, up from the previous 8, doubling its passenger capacity. The decision comes amid an overwhelming surge in demand and long waiting lists on the route.

The Kottayam–Nilambur Road Intercity Express has also received two additional coaches, further improving regional connectivity.

Despite the expansion, the Vande Bharat Express continues to face high demand, with the Thiruvananthapuram–Mangaluru route currently showing over 100 passengers on the waiting list. Calls are growing to increase the total number of coaches to 20 to accommodate the rising passenger load.
