Kerala Leads the Nation in Government Job Appointments, Leaving Bigger States Behind: UPSC Data

Thiruvananthapuram: In a remarkable display of administrative efficiency, Kerala has emerged as the top-performing state in government job recommendations for the first half of 2024, outshining much larger states across India. According to data released by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), the Kerala Public Service Commission (PSC) recommended 18,051 appointments between January and June—more than half of the total 30,987 recommendations made by all other state PSCs combined.

What’s even more striking is that Kerala, with only 2.5% of the nation’s population, accounted for a staggering 36% of all PSC recruitments during this period, setting a national benchmark for transparent and timely public hiring. The state’s track record continues to impress, with 1.61 lakh appointments between 2016–2021 and another 1.11 lakh from 2021 up to January 2025.

In the Group A category, Kerala’s recommendations included 1,442 from SC, 843 from ST, 5,959 from OBC, and 9,807 from the General category. Notably, there were no Group B or C appointments during this time.

In contrast, several other states lagged far behind. Arunachal Pradesh made no appointments, Andhra Pradesh had just 6, Goa 35, Jharkhand 47, and Sikkim 86. Even Gujarat, the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, reported only 611 appointments, while Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state, registered just 753.

Kerala’s performance not only highlights the state’s commitment to merit-based recruitment but also positions its PSC as a model for the rest of the country.
