Women’s Reservation Amendment Bill Fails in Lok Sabha Vote

New Delhi: In a setback to the Centre, the proposed amendment to the Women’s Reservation bill failed to pass in the Lok Sabha after falling short of the required two-thirds majority.

Out of 528 members who voted, 298 supported the bill while 230 opposed it. However, as a constitutional amendment, the bill required at least 352 votes to be passed. It ultimately fell short by 54 votes, leading to its defeat.

With the failure of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, related proposals including the Delimitation Bill and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill also could not be passed.

Reacting to the development, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi said the opposition would consider supporting the bill in the future if the Centre addresses the concerns raised by them.
