Narayana Murthy Slams India’s AI Hype: Calls It ‘Silly, Old Programs’

At TiE Con Mumbai 2025, Infosys founder N.R. Narayana Murthy voiced strong skepticism over India’s AI advancements, calling them overhyped and misleading. He criticized the misrepresentation of AI, arguing that many so-called breakthroughs are merely old algorithms repackaged under new labels rather than true innovations.

Murthy asserted that while AI holds immense potential, India is far from being a global AI leader, as most developments in the country rely on decades-old automation techniques rather than pioneering research. He stressed the need for genuine AI breakthroughs, which require deep investments, cutting-edge research, and a strong foundation in mathematics and computing.

Encouraging Indian startups and tech leaders to move beyond marketing gimmicks, he urged them to focus on substantial contributions to AI research. His remarks have ignited a heated debate in the tech community, with experts questioning whether India’s AI ambitions are overstated or on the right track.
