Life Imprisonment for 12 Accused in Madhu Lynching Case

The Kerala High Court on Monday sentenced 12 convicts to life imprisonment in the case related to the lynching of tribal youth Madhu in Attappady.

The court also awarded one year imprisonment to another accused in the case.

Earlier, the High Court had acquitted first accused Hussain. It also upheld the trial court’s decision acquitting the fourth and eleventh accused. The latest verdict pertains to the remaining 13 accused.

The High Court had earlier ruled that offences under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act were applicable against all 13 convicted persons. It overturned the trial court’s finding that the provisions of the SC/ST Act would not apply in the case.

The state government had sought enhancement of the punishment awarded to the accused.
