Kerala High Court Forms Special Bench to Tackle Rising Ragging Cases

Kochi: In response to the increasing incidents of ragging in educational institutions, the Kerala High Court has decided to form a special bench to handle such cases and ensure the strict enforcement of anti-ragging laws. The decision follows a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by the Kerala State Legal Services Authority (KELSA), which highlighted the growing menace of ragging and called for stronger monitoring mechanisms.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar and Justice S. Manu heard the petition and emphasized the need for systematic intervention. The PIL urged the court to direct the establishment of monitoring committees at both state and district levels and to set up grievance redressal cells in all educational institutions to address complaints promptly.

The High Court has taken the matter seriously and has asked the state government to file a response regarding the alleged lapses in taking strict action against ragging incidents. Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar announced that a special bench would be constituted to exclusively deal with ragging-related cases and that an official notification regarding this would be issued soon.

The move is expected to strengthen the implementation of anti-ragging laws in Kerala and provide better protection for students facing harassment in educational institutions.
