Kerala Nurse Nimisha Priya’s Life Hangs in Balance as Yemen Confirms Death Sentence; India Intensifies Efforts for Pardon

In a deeply emotional and high-stakes case, Nimisha Priya, a Kerala nurse, faces execution in Yemen after the Yemeni President Rashad al-Alimi approved her death sentence for the 2017 murder of Yemeni national Talal Abdo Mahdi.

In 2014, Nimisha Priya moved to Yemen and partnered with Mahdi to run a medical clinic. Over time, she accused him of harassment, financial exploitation, and confiscation of her passport. In July 2017, in an attempt to recover her documents, Priya administered a sedative to Mahdi, which tragically resulted in his death. She was arrested and subsequently sentenced to death in 2018.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has assured full support, stating they are “exploring all possible avenues” to assist Priya. Officials confirmed ongoing diplomatic efforts to resolve the matter.

Under Yemeni law, Priya’s life could still be spared if blood money (diya) is paid to the victim’s family. The amount demanded is approximately $40,000, of which over $19,800 has already been raised. Efforts are ongoing to secure the remaining sum.

The case has triggered widespread public sympathy and advocacy campaigns in India. The ‘Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council’ is actively raising funds and spreading awareness. Legal experts have raised concerns about the fairness of her trial, highlighting language barriers and lack of proper legal representation during court proceedings.

As negotiations continue with the victim’s family and tribal leaders, Priya’s family, supporters, and the Indian government remain hopeful for a resolution that will spare her life and bring her back home safely.
