Ravichandran Ashwin Bids Farewell to International Cricket After Illustrious Career

India’s legendary off-spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin, announced his retirement from international cricket on December 18, 2024, following the third Test against Australia at the Gabba in Brisbane. This marked the end of a stellar career for the 38-year-old, who leaves behind a remarkable legacy as one of India’s greatest bowlers.

Ashwin, with 537 wickets in 106 Tests, is India’s second-highest wicket-taker in the format, trailing only the legendary Anil Kumble (619 wickets). Reflecting on his decision, Ashwin remarked during the post-match press conference:

“This will be my last day as an Indian cricketer in all formats at the international level. I do feel there’s a bit of punch left in me as a cricketer, but I would like to showcase that in club-level cricket.”

His retirement comes at a time when Indian cricket is undergoing a period of transition, with other senior players also considering their futures.

Ashwin’s career is decorated with numerous milestones: he was the fastest bowler to reach 300 Test wickets in terms of innings and claimed 11 Man of the Series awards, tying with Sri Lankan great Muttiah Muralitharan. He was more than just a bowler—his batting contributions included six Test centuries and a rare achievement of 3,000 runs and 500 wickets in Tests.

As he steps away from the international stage, Ashwin’s departure signifies the closing of an era marked by his skill, consistency, and dedication to Indian cricket. His legacy will be cherished by fans and serve as an inspiration for future generations.
