The Malayalam film industry is set for a transformative change with the formation of the “Progressive Filmmakers’ Union,” spearheaded by leading figures such as Aashiq Abu, Anjali Menon, Rima Kallingal, and others. The union, currently in discussions, aims to champion workers’ rights and promote a progressive, inclusive culture within the industry.
The union has already reached out to film professionals, laying out a vision that focuses on equality, cooperation, and social justice. Its formation follows significant conversations within the industry around labor rights, gender equality, and the response to the Hema Committee Report on misconduct. Aashiq Abu, after stepping down from FEFKA, is expected to play a key leadership role alongside other influential filmmakers.
This initiative is seen as a response to long-standing calls for structural reforms and fair treatment of workers, signaling a new era for Malayalam cinema.
