Chennai, July 10 (IVC) The Tamil Nadu government has decided to appoint a one-man committee under retired Madras High Court Judge, K Sathyanarayanan to examine the three new criminal laws and suggest State amendments to them.
The decision was taken at a meeting here on July 08 chaired by the Chief Minister M K Stalin. The committee would examine, among other issues, the “change in nomenclature” of the new laws at the State level, and submit its recommendations to the State government, an official press release said.
The committee would also hold consultations with various stakeholders, including lawyers’ associations and submit its recommendations to the government within a month, the release added.
Minister Duraimurugan, Advocate-General , P S aman, Chief Secretary Shiv Das Meena, Director General of Police, Shankar Jiwal and senior officials were present at the meeting. The new criminal laws, replacing the Indian penal Code, the Criminal Procedure Code and the Indian Evidence Act came into force since July One.
However, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister last month had written to the Union Home Minister requesting him to keep these laws in abeyance till the States’ concerns were addressed. Last week, various associations of lawyers called on the Chief Minister to urge the Centre not to implement the new criminal laws, flagging various concerns, the release added.
