Guwahati: The Assam unit of the Congress will organise a statewide ‘padayatra’ on August 29 to protest the proposed reduction of the Eco-Sensitive Zone (ESZ) around Kaziranga National Park, the party said on Wednesday.
The Congress claimed that the proposed move could pose a serious threat to wildlife, biodiversity and the fragile ecosystem surrounding the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In a circular, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee general secretary (organisation) Ramanna Baruah directed all district Congress committee presidents to organise the padayatra in their respective areas.
Party leaders and workers have also been asked to participate actively in the programme and mobilise public opinion against the proposed reduction of the ESZ.
The Congress maintained that protecting the ecological security of Kaziranga was essential for safeguarding its rich wildlife and biodiversity.
