PM Modi speaks to injured pilot Smit Machchhar, praises his courage

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday spoke to Captain Smit Machchhar through a video call and wished him a speedy recovery, praising his courage and quick decision-making in an emergency that helped save passengers’ lives.

During the conversation, Modi asked about the pilot’s health and said the entire country was praying for his recovery. He praised Machchhar for prioritising the safety of passengers despite suffering serious injuries himself.

The Prime Minister said the pilot’s actions had brought pride to the country and highlighted the importance of his presence of mind during the critical situation.

Machchhar reportedly shared details of the incident with Modi, including how his 17 years of flying experience helped him understand that the aircraft was in serious danger. Despite being badly injured and trapped, he made a final effort to open the door, determined to prevent further loss of life.

Modi also appreciated the pilot’s account of drawing spiritual strength from reciting the Hanuman Chalisa during the ordeal. He recalled speaking with Machchhar’s family and praised his parents and wife for their composure and faith.

The Prime Minister also thanked the governments of Saudi Arabia and the UAE for providing medical assistance to the injured pilot. He said Machchhar’s actions had brought recognition to Indian pilots globally.

As the conversation took place on Gandhi Jayanti, Modi said Machchhar had demonstrated the spirit of non-violence by saving lives. He assured the pilot that he remained available to him and wished him a complete and speedy recovery.
